The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
- Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Small Animal Medicine;
- Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
- Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
- Research and publication in scientific journals;
- Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
- Community engagement;
- Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
- Academic self-development.
Lecturer
- A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
- Registration with the SAVC at the time of appointment or eligibility for registration within a reasonable time;
- A MSc-degree in Veterinary Science with the research topic related to Small Animal Medicine; or at least 2 years of specialist training in Small Animal Medicine by the time of appointment; or an Advance Practitioner qualification in Small Animal Medicine and at least 1 year of specialist training in Small Animal Medicine by the time of appointment;
Senior Lecturer
- A BVSc / BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification; PLUS
- An MMedVet- degree in Small Animal Medicine;
- Acknowledged clinical expertise;
- Registration as a veterinarian with the SAVC, or eligibility for registration within one year of appointment;
- Four years specialist Small Animal Medicine experience; and
- At least two full research paper of which one can be a case report in an accredited scientific journal as senior author (NB: Case study involves the descriptive outcome or one of more clinical cases).
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Proven knowledge and competence in Small Animal Medicine;
- Willingness to participate in extracurricular academic activities or events;
- Research interest appropriate to the position;
- Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the relevant teaching level;
- Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PhD in a reasonable period of time;
- Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
- Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.
- Involvement in professional activities where appropriate; and
- PG Certificate in teaching and learning in Higher Education.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
