Lecturer/Senior Lecturer: Small Animal Medicine - Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies

UP Posting - Academic FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF COMPANION ANIMAL CLINICAL STUDIES LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER: SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE (4 POSTS) In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the above vacancy. RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

• Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Small Animal Medicine;
• Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
• Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
• Research and publication in scientific journals;
• Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
• Community engagement;
• Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
• Academic self-development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer

• A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
• Registration with the SAVC at the time of appointment or eligibility for registration within a reasonable time;
• A MSc-degree in Veterinary Science with the research topic related to Small Animal Medicine; or at least 2 years of specialist training in Small Animal Medicine by the time of appointment; or an Advance Practitioner qualification in Small Animal Medicine and at least 1 year of specialist training in Small Animal Medicine by the time of appointment;

Senior Lecturer

• A BVSc / BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification; PLUS
• An MMedVet- degree in Small Animal Medicine;
• Acknowledged clinical expertise;
• Registration as a veterinarian with the SAVC, or eligibility for registration within one year of appointment;
• Four years specialist Small Animal Medicine experience; and
• At least two full research paper of which one can be a case report in an accredited scientific journal as senior author (NB: Case study involves the descriptive outcome or one of more clinical cases).

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

• Proven knowledge and competence in Small Animal Medicine;
• Willingness to participate in extracurricular academic activities or events;
• Research interest appropriate to the position;
• Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the relevant teaching level;
• Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PhD in a reasonable period of time;
• Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
• Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

• Involvement in professional activities where appropriate; and
• PG Certificate in teaching and learning in Higher Education.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
